Violating STP norms will face action: mayor

Mangaluru , May 8, 2017: Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) Mayor Kavitha Sanil said the civic authorities are mulling over filing criminal cases against industries and multistoreyed buildings that fail to make provisions for sewage treatment plants (STPs) during the construction stage.

Speaking to media on the sidelines of a programme here on May 7, Sunday, she shared details on the resolutions passed during a meeting held at Bengaluru by the mayors of city corporations in connection with environment pollution. The meeting decided to make it compulsory for all multi-storeyed buildings including industries to have STPs. She said that 482 industries in Bengaluru have been served notices while criminal cases were filed against 92 industries.

The MCC is mulling over making STP mandatory. She said the state government, in its notification in 2016, mandates that all industry or multi-storeyed buildings should have a STP. The direction of the state government is yet to be implemented effectively in the jurisdiction of the MCC.

There is a need to take precautionary measures to ensure that no problem is faced during the monsoon, she felt. She said that action will be initiated against the already completed multi-storeyed buildings and industries violating the norms on STP. She said the state government has already banned the use of plastic and efforts would be made to make Mangaluru free from plastic in the next seven months.

The mayor said that the water-level in Thumbe vented dam, that supplies water to Mangaluru, has stood at 4.9 metre. With the rainfall in the last few days, the inflow of water to the dam has increased in spite of the civic authorities supplying water daily to its citizens.

The MCC had sunk several borewells to mitigate water crisis during the last summer. This year, only a few borewells have been sunk. The public have not complained on water crisis.

To respond to the needs of the citizens and to solve problems, a phone-in-programme will be organised every month, she stated.
