The Moodubidri police retrieved 4,923 detonators, stored in plastic bags and gunny sacks. They said that the place in which the explosives were found belonged to a stone mining company based in the locality.

Hareesh Poojary, a local herdsman, found the hidden explosives when he was grazing his cattle on the evening of Sunday. He immediately told the other villagers, who informed the police.

Although the villagers suspect that the explosives belong to Naxalites, the police have confirmed that they belong to a stone mining company, which is located at a distance of 1 – 2 kilometres from the place where they were found.

Last year, 3 workers employed by this stone mining company died in an explosion, said the police.

The owners of the stone mining company said that they stored the inadequate detonators in a safe place to avoid tragedy. But the panic-stricken local people have demanded that strict police action must be taken against the company for storing its explosives in an irresponsible manner.

A. K. Thimmaiah, circle inspector for Moodubidri; Basavaraj Palote, tahsildar; and many others also visited the spot.
