Veteran journalist M.V.Kamath no more

Manipal,  Oct 9, 2014 : Renowned journalist and former chairman of Prasar Bharati, Madhav Vittal Kamath, popularly known as M.V. Kamath passed away at KMC Hospital at Manipal on October 9, Thursday  morning. Kamath was ailing since some time. He was 93.

He died of cardiac arrest at 7.30am. "He was suffering from spondylosis for some time," said Dr (Col) M Dayananda, medical superintendent and COO, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal.

M.V.Kamath who hailed from Udupi did his B.Sc in Physics and Chemistry and worked in  the field of chemistry for some time  before  choosing the journalism field.

His distinguished career as a journalist began with The Sunday Times(India) in 1967. After working for two years, he joined Times of India as its Washington Correspondent in 1969. Kamath had even  worked as the Editor of The Illustrated Weekly of India.

Kamath was awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan Award in 2004 in recognition of his distinguished services to the field of  journalism. He even received the Honorary Doctorate of Mangalore University in the year 2007.

He was the Honorary President and Honorary Director of Manipal Institute of Communications and also a Member of the Executive Committee of MAHE Deemed University. Kamath had authored around 40 books on varied topics.

 

Mangalore Today magazine had  honoured  Dr. M.V. Kamath with the Lifetime Achievement Award on the occasion of its Tenth Anniversary in 2005.
 

The last rites of veteran journalist M V Kamath was held on Thursday evening, October 9, 2014 at Manipal.

Vinayakumar Soreke, Udupi District in-charge and Karnataka Urban Development Minister, Mr. Puttanna Shetty, Deputy Commissioner of Udupi and Mr.Rajendra Prasad, SP were among many eminent personalities paid tribute to the departed soul.
