Udupi: September 6, 2015: Vinay Kumar Sorake, Urban Development Minister, said on Saturday the value system of a society depended on the quality of education provided to students. He was speaking after inaugurating the district-level Teachers’ Day celebrations organised by the District Celebrations Committee and G. Shankar Family Trust here.

Mr. Sorake said teachers had the onerous responsibility of shaping the character of students. Teaching was a two-way interaction. A teacher cleared all the doubts of the students before he ended his classes. This meant that a teacher himself or herself has to read a lot. “A capable teacher has the power to change a person and show him the right path,” he said.

The Minister said the district was blessed to possess good teachers who provide quality education not just in private but also in government and aided schools. This was amply testified by the fact that Udupi topped the State in SSLC examinations held in the previous academic year.

It was in the second position when it came to the second year PU exams. The district had lost the top position in second year PU exams to Dakshina Kannada by a whisker.

The district topped the State in the implementation of the Akshara Dasoha midday meals programme, according to a survey. The district also utilised funds provided to it under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Rashtirya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan, Mr. Sorake said.
