The protestors also called for a strike within the municipal limits and blocked traffic. Shops and other commercial establishments were shut down and public transport services refused to ply.

Some unidentified persons painted the national flag of Pakistan with green paint on the boundary walls of three temples, and this triggered the protest, informed police sources. Crowds of furious devotees rushed to the temple; and the situation almost went out of control.

The local police were on duty at Perla, where the CM of Kerala V. S. Achyuthanandan was due to arrive; the absence of the police gave the miscreants a chance to do their mischief.

However, the police rushed to the spot of disturbance, and tightened security in the town. The situation is now back to normal.
