Use marketing techniques for crowd funding: Pawan Kumar @ ’Shooting Stars’

 Mangaluru, Feb 15, 2015 :  Pawan Kumar," award winning filmmaker and director of film Lucia, said that f or  effective crowd funding,  smart marketing techniques , creating a brand name and getting your point across through social media is the game.  Pawan was conducting a workshop - high quality films on low budget at "Shooting Stars", a national level seminar conducted by department of journalism, St Aloysius College here on Saturday. Earlier, Pawan also inaugurated the workshop.

 With an innovative approach and lecturing with stills from Lucia, Pawan Kumar,  on crowd funding, said, "To create crowd funding, use smart marketing technique, create a brand name and get your point across through social media." Stressing on the relationships between the filmmakers and the audience he said, "Connect to the people with the same idea". On filmmaking, he said, "Important ingredients when you tell a story are film maker and the audience."

Sooryanarayan Bhat, assistant professor of English, Sri Dharmasthala Manjunateshwara (SDM) College, Ujjre focusing on the topic - projection of men in Indian cinema, said, "It is in the mindset of the society of India about male projection which is the cause of the large scale production of male centred films." Hero-centric focus of Indian films have always kept the cash registers ringing and it is only of late that one sees that even the women are getting their due.

This technical session was followed by documentary analysis - The perverts guide to cinema by Janith Lakmal, journalism student of the college. After the workshop, shortlisted movies were screened, followed by the valedictory function. Alwyn D’Sa, faculty, department of English, who presided over the function said, "Film making requires attributes, spirit of inquiry and critical thinking". Fr Walter Andrade, finance minister of the College gave away the awards.

As an example, he said they could upload their short films – shot on mobile phones or handycams – to YouTube to gauge audience response. Kumar said he could attract total strangers – 110 of them – to invest in Lucia through social media. The film had attracted the attention of bigwigs in the industry. The impact was so high that print and TV media began to write about the film and conduct interviews.

"Thu-paan" an SDM College Production, SDM College, Ujire, bagged the best short film award. Second best short film award was bagged by Mutthamby Filmgun production of the host college. Best photography award was won by Murli Krishna, SDM College Ujire, with the second best photography award going to Nithesh P of Mangalore University. SDM
