Urwa Market project likely to take off next year

Mangaluru, Dec 29, 2015 : The proposal of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to build a market-cum-commercial complex at Urwa Market appears to be heading towards reality.

The Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) will build it. The corporation had handed over 68 cents of land at Urwa Market to MUDA for 35 years on March 14, 2008. The complex will be built on 55.4 cents of land.

Mangaluru :  MCC - Mangaluru City Corporation’s plans  to build a market-cum-commercial complex at Urwa Market appears to be heading towards reality.  MUDA - Mangaluru Urban Development Authority will build it on 55.4 cents of land given by the corporation.  MCC had handed over 68 cents of land at Urwa Market to MUDA for 35 years on March 14, 2008. The complex will be built on 55.4 cents of land.

H.N. Gopalakrishna, Commissioner, MCC, stated the draft agreement between the two bodies for building the complex was ready. It would have to be signed between the commissioners of the two bodies. A DPR -  detailed project report,  was ready and had been submitted for technical sanction. He said that works on the Rs. 11.75-crore project was likely to take off in 2016.

He said that the existing traders at Urwa Market would be re-located to a temporary structure before taking up the project. Nirmiti Kendra would build the structure for Rs. 16 lakh.

The Commissioner said that the vegetable, flower, fruit and fish market of the corporation at Urwa Stores would also be re-built by the MUDA as a market-cum-commercial complex at an estimated cost of Rs. 26 crore. This project would be taken up after the Urwa Market project. The two commissioners would sign a separate agreement to it. The DPR of the Urwa Stores project was yet to be ready.

The corporation handed over the MUDA 88 cents of its land at Urwa Stores for the project on the same day in 2008. This land has also been handed over to 35 years.

He said that moves were on re-build the central market and Kankanady market in a modern way. The concept plans of both the projects were ready. Its feasibility reports were yet to be prepared.

The commissioner said that the corporation had taken up works on building drains and footpaths on nine roads in the city.  The first phase of works were started recently after Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake launched them.
