Udupi, Jan 29, 2017: It is reported that Subramanian Swamy, MP and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, said on Jan 28, Saturday that the Uniform Civil Code will definitely come. Dr. Swamy questioned if triple talaq was not a violation of human rights. Half the Muslim population was with the government on this issue, he claimed.

Most political parties had banked on unity of minority communities and disunity in majority community for political gains in the country. But in 2014, the reverse had happened. If the Hindus united fully, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could get a two-thirds majority in the next parliamentary elections.

The Uniform Civil Code was a constitutional directive as it came under the Directive Principles of State Policy. The Union government would have to bring a Bill for the Uniform Civil Code and get it passed. If it did not enjoy a majority in Rajya Sabha, it would have to be passed in a joint session of the Parliament, he said.
