The accused was produced before the court on the last day of his 15-day police custody. The accused has been in Police custody at Udupi since August 14.

The court remanded Bannanje Raja to judicial custody as the Udupi Superintendent of Police Annamalai K. submitted that the 15 days of his custody did not need extension. However, he told the court that the Udupi police could seek his custody if required for investigations.

Raja was brought to Belagavi from Udupi under tight police security under personal supervision of Mr. Annamalai.

Later, speaking while speaking to mediapersons, Mr. Annamalai said that he declined to take Raja under police custody as there was no need for it. But, in view of a large number of cases, including murder and extortion facing the accused in various police stations of Karnataka, the concerned police could take into their custody for investigations. Until then, the accused would be housed in the Central Prison at Hindalga in the outskirts of Belagavi city.

Bananje Raja was produced before the Belgavi KCOCA court in connection with the murder of entrepreneur R.N. Nayak in 2013 for not paying ransom in Udupi. He is the accused number nine among the eleven in the case of whom two are in Kalaburagi jail and eight incarcerated in Hindalga prison, Mr. Annamalai said.
