Undertrials in jail need to understand their crimes, offences

Udupi, Nov 11, 2018: District and Sessions Court Judge of Udupi, Venkatesh Naik urged undertrials to introspect in order to overcome evil deeds streaming through the mind.

He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the National Legal Services Day organised at the district prison. He said self-retrospection would help undertrials lead a new life outside the barracks. A crime sometimes is committed without applying the mind. Law is only matter of evidence and proof, if the guilt is proved, the undertrials will be convicted. When the undertrial is acquitted, for lack of evidence, he still may have had a role in crimes, so they should involve themselves in healthy activities in order to lead a better life, said the Judge. He said jail authorities maintain records tracking the behaviour of the inmates.

“Good behaviour inside the prison will result in commuting of the punishment,” he stressed and urged other inmates to seek help from the Legal Service Authority if they faced any legal problems.

Diverting the mind in activities that are healthy is encouraged in the jail. However, it should not lead to outside forces contributing to undesirable and unhealthy diversions; the authorities need to carefully filter such goings on.

Udupi SP Laxman Nimbargi said convicts should try to control their hate, anger and stop seeking revenge. They should try to dream of a new life and work towards realising these dreams, he added.
