Addressing press, DC . Korlapati said that she had carried out a thorough study of the water situation in the city. She had also gone through the steps taken by the authorities in the previous years to tackle water shortage.

She had held discussions with the municipal officers. The Udupi City Municipal Council would soon issue a media notification detailing the steps to tackle the water situation in the city, she said.

Asked about water scarcity in rural areas, DC  Korlapati said that the gram panchayats had been directed to give priority to tackle the drinking water situation. They had been told to provide water through tankers in water-scarce areas. But these tankers had to be equipped with GPS equipment.

This condition was introduced so that it was also possible to track the source of water, with the intention being to provide safe drinking water.

While the issue had been almost resolved in Kundapur and Karkala taluks as tenders had been floated and water was being supplied through tankers in those places, there had been a slight delay in Udupi taluk, she said.

On the steps that the district administration would take in the light of the National Green Tribunal order with regard to the 1,200 MW coal-based thermal power plant of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd. at Yellur in Udupi district, Ms. Korlapati said that the district administration had not received the order copy so far.

But she had read reports about it in the media. Some other government agencies were involved in it. The administration would look into the matter and take appropriate action, she said.

Udupi Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Sindhu B. Rupesh was present.
