Udupi’s largest mosque inaugurated

Udupi, August 10, 2012: The Rs. 2 crore Jamia Masjid, the largest mosque in Udupi, was inaugurated on August 10, Friday. Delivering the inaugural address, Abdul Riyaz Khan, chairman of the State Wakf Board, spoke of the importance of achieving higher goals. Stressing on the importance of education for the Muslim community, he said that the percentage of Muslims in the government sector is less than 2%, a situation that has to change.

Revealing details about the newly inaugurated mosque, he said that around 200 – 300 shops will be set up in and around the mosque and a profit of Rs. 1 crore is expected from these shops. This profit will be used for the welfare of the Muslim community, he added.

K. S. Mohammed Masood, former MLC; Imran Hidayathulla, CEO of Hidayath Group of Industries; T. S. Budan Basha, president of the Jamia Mosque managing committee; Athif Hussain, its vice president; and Qamaruddin M., its secretary, were also present.

Jamia Masjid is the first mosque in Udupi to have a separate space with the capacity to hold 400 people, exclusively for women.
