Udupi mosque renovated with exclusive space for women

Udupi,Aug 8, 2012 : The newly renovated Jamia Masjid in Udupi has a special hall, meant exclusively for women, where they can offer namaz five times per day. A separate road has been constructed for women to reach their area of the mosque too.

Around Rs. 3 crore was spent in renovating this mosque, which now spreads over an area of 18,000sq.ft. Located near Udupi Bus Stand, the renovated structure comprises 3 floors with the capacity to accommodate 3000 people. The ground floor is 5,200sq.ft., the first floor is 6,000sq.ft., and the second floor is around 4,500sq.ft. The mosque also has separate washrooms for men and women along with two separate rooms to bathe and enshroud bodies of the deceased according to the Shariah.

Constructed as per the Mughal style of architecture, the mosque has a minaret and an attractive dome. The structure is now the largest mosque in Udupi. Sajjad Association, based in Bangalore, is the architect, and S. N. Constructions of Udupi is the contractor.


T. S. Budan Basha, president of the managing committee of the Jamia Masjid, said that the mosque will be used to give classes in Quran and Arabic. However, it cannot function as a madarasa at present.


Hidayuthulla Abbas of Uchila, the chief donor of this mosque, will inaugurate the renovated mosque on Aug 10. Mohiyuddin Jeelani, khateeb of the masjid, will deliver the sermon and lead the namaz. An inftar program will also be held in the evening.
