Udupi has biggest spike in Covid-19 cases; 150 test positive today

Udupi, June 02, 2020:   In what comes as a big shock for people of  Udupi district as well as the state,  a total of 150 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the district on June 2, Tuesday. With today’s big spike, the Covid-19 tally of the district has risen to 410.


Earlier in the day, Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka speaking to media in Bengaluru said that 210 cases were detected in Udupi, but the state bulletin in the evening clarified it as 150.

State Minister R Ashok  who gave information about the Covid-19 positive cases in Bengaluru, said the government is keepinga close watch  on people who are returning from Maharashtra.


“Maharashtra returnees will be closely monitored by the officials. They will have to compulsorily undergo 7 days of institutional quarantine and 14 days home quarantine. Soon the government will issue new guidelines for the other states returnees,” said Ashoka.

 

What is alarming in case of Udupi is that most who have completed their quarantine period and have returned to their homes are  tested positive.

Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Tuesday directed district authorities including the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police to camp at taluk centres and work towards curbing the spread of COVID-19. Calling for strengthening of vigilance mechanism on those in home quarantine at ward and village level, he said, FIR should be booked against those violating quarantine norms.

Yediyurappa held a videoconference with DCs, ZP CEOs and SPs of Udupi, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Yadgir, Raichur and Belagavi districts that have seen spike in cases. Asking DCs, ZP CEOs and SPs to divide taluks of respective district among themselves and camp there to supervise the control of COVID-19 from there, the Chief Minister said all precautions should be ensured before easing the lockdown restrictions on June 8 and the guidelines issued by the central government has to be followed.
