 Udupi, Sep 13, 2015 ;  Speaking at the foundation stone ceremony for the building of district remand home and Juvenile Justice Board at a cost of Rs 1.15 crore,  Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake said, the destitute especially the women and children should be protected and supported by the society.


 Udupi district remand home - Foundation stone laidThe minister added that the women are always the victims of atrocities in the male dominated society. The legal support should be made available for such women and they should be protected.

He said a separate health unit is set up at the government hospital for women. The children who commit crimes would be henceforth rehabilitated in Udupi itself after the completion of the building. Currently they are shifted to Shimoga for the rehabilitation. Principal Civil judge (Senior Division) and Chief Judicial Magistrate Nagajyothi said it is the responsibility of the society to set right the children who take up the wrong path. Attempt should be made to bring them to the mainstream of the society. Most of the times they commit crime unknowingly.

Udupi-Chikkamagalur MP Shobha Karandalje said the family and media play a major role in shaping the future of the children. They are highly influenced with the family environment and also the media. Currently the juvenile offence is increasing and stringent measures should be introduced to curb the it.

The juvenile crime should have the age limit only till 14 years similar to that of the age limit prescribed for the child labour it was stated.
