Udupi, May 12, 2016: Legislator Pramod Madhwaraj has informed that the water at the Baje dam across Swarna River is suffice until May 26.
Speaking at a meeting of officials at Udupi CMC on May 11, Wednesday, he said water level in the dam stood at 2.25 meters on Wednesday while last year during the same period, water level was 4.17 meters.
If it used to rain at least twice or thrice in the past by this time, to add to the problem, this year the extreme heat condition has led to evaporation of water, he added.
He said Udupi will be in deep trouble if it does not rain before May 26. Pramod Madhwaraj also informed that CMC staff have been asked to identify all open wells and bore wells in the city so that water could be supplied to affected areas. Even government wells and open wells have been identified and if the water is potable, it would be supplied to the people through tankers, he added.
He also informed that an Emergency Task Force has been set up to deal with the situation.
Assistant Engineer K Ganesh informed that public have been informed about the timing of water supply.
CMC President Meenakshi Bannanje, Vice President Sandhya Kumari and others were present.
