There are 42 communities that come under the Scheduled Tribes and there are 42 lakh people. Lamenting that the target set under the programme of self employment to the tribal youth could not be achieved, the chairman said that an individual would receive Rs 1 lakh, of which Rs 35,000 is subsidy under the programme. It will be linked to the banks.  He said that women in the erstwhile Dakshina Kannada district were not coming forward to avail the benefits of micro credit, provided through self help groups.

Stating that the amount released for the land purchase to the tribal communities was insufficient, the chairman said that at present Rs 10 lakh was offered to the needy. However, especially in erstwhile Dakshina Kannada the amount is meagre as the land value is high owing to the market price.

Crediting the slow pace of work in the Board to the non-availability of infrastructure, the chairman said the government had approved offices in only 16 districts, of which 12 are showing progress. Four offices will be functioning shortly. He added that government was approached for offices in another 14 districts. He said that funds were released to all districts based on the population.   Under newly initiated ‘Asare’ programme for widows and differently abled, Rs 25,000 will be ensured, of which Rs 10,000 is subsidy. The proposals have been sent to the government.

Basavaraju added that there is confusion prevailing in the district concerning the community centres, which have remained unattended. He added that tribals were also demanding waiver of loans availed by them from co-operative societies. A proposal will be sent to the government over the demand.

He added that under Forest Right Act, the Edu village in Karkala is pending for consideration. He said that the Kudremukh National Park evacuees were demanding pending compensation packages promised under rehabilitation. He said that the civic workers belonging to Koraga communities were demanding that their jobs should be regularised, he added.
