Udupi, Feb 06, 2015: Udupi SP Annamalai has said that the police department has instructed all bars in Udupi district to close by 11.30 pm while he said hotels can remain open till midnight.
The SP was speaking to reporters on February 5, Wednesday in the backdrop of the February 2 incident wherein Pnith Reddy (20), a student of MIT died reportedly after falling from the fourth floor of an apartment. Expressing his grave concern over the increasing cases of drug addiction among students the SP said the Department was aware of some drug activities in hostels and apartments. If students are found taking drugs in such hostels and apartments, then the owners of such buildings would be held responsible, the SP warned.
He also said that educational institutions will themselves be held responsible in case of any drug racket operative close by the institutions.
With regard to the death of Punith, the SP said the father of the student in his complaint has suspected that his son night have been pushed by other students resulting in his death. However, it is learnt, police have claimed that Punith was inebriated and had jumped off the balcony.
