Udupi: Rs. 100 crore for beach development in Udupi district - DC

Udupi, June 04, 2015:  Presiding over the district tourism committee meeting at the District Offices Complex, Dr. R. Vishal, Deputy Commissioner, on June 3, Wednesday declared  that Rs. 100 crore will be spent to develop tourism spots in Udupi in the next one year.

Udupi DC Dr. Vishal said the money will be spent mainly on connecting feeder roads to the main roads leading to the tourist spots. Already tenders are announced for the development and maintenance of beaches at Kaup, Trasi and Maravanthe.  Efforts were also on to develop beaches at Padubidri and Someshwara also. Emphasis was being laid on providing basic facilities, safety and cleanliness on the beaches.

He said that the Malpe Development Committee had already taken steps to construct a police outpost and a watch tower on Malpe beach. A road would be constructed on the northern side to improve connectivity and a vehicle to collect garbage would soon be pressed into service.

St. Mary’s Island and Malpe beach would be developed with funds from the corporate social responsibility of companies and he directed Project Director of Nirmiti Kendra Arun Kumar to expedite the construction of the watchtower and the northern side road at Malpe.

He directed Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) Commissioner D. Manjunathayya to take action against tourist boat owners, who had not paid their dues at Malpe beach.   Manjunathaya informed the meeting that health inspectors were regularly checking the food quality at petty shops on Malpe beach.

P. Nagaraj, Assistant Director of Tourism, said that three homestays were already functioning in the district and 11 applications for starting homestays had been forwarded to the head office in Bengaluru.

Tenders had been floated for making a documentary, hoardings and maps on the tourist spots of the district. Folders on the tourist spots too would be printed, he said.  Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA, Janardhan Tonse, Chairman of Udupi Urban Development Authority (UUDA), K. Annamalai, Superintendent of Police, were present.
