Udupi: Laksha Deepotsava at Udupi a celebration of lights

Udupi, Nov 24, 2015: A large number of devotees thronged the Car Street here; The ‘Laksha Deepotsava’ was celebrated with traditional festivities here on Nov 23, Monday.  The extravaganza,  after the evening prayers, the idols (‘utsava murthis’) of Lord Krishna and Lord Mukhyaprana were brought in a palanquin and placed on a decorated boat at 7.10 p.m. The boat was decorated in the form of a ‘mantapa’.

The decorated boat went around the Madhwa Sarovar three times — known as the ‘Teppotsava’. The pond was resplendent with the beauty of the earthen lamps lit around it.

The utsava murthis of Lord Krishna and Lord Mukhyaprana were then kept in the ‘Garuda Ratha’, while the utsava murthis of Lord Ananteshwara and Lord Chandramouleshwara were placed in the ‘Mahapooja Ratha’ and taken around the Car Street.

The Car Street was bedecked with thousands of oil lamps lit on specially constructed wooden rows around it. Vidyavallabha Tirtha Swami of Paryaya Kaniyur Mutt, Vidyasagara Tirtha Swami of Krishnapur Mutt, Vidyadheesha Tirtha Swami of Palimar Mutt, and Ishapriya Tirtha Swami, junior seer of Admar Mutt, participated in the festival, which is celebrated during the Uthana Dwadashi.
