Udupi : Inter-faith Deepavali celebrations add gaiety to Festival of Light

Udupi, Nov 12, 2015: The Mother of Sorrows Church in Udupi was witness to an event resplendent of communal harmony on the auspicious occasion of Deepavali, the Festival of Lights on November 11, Wednesday. The inter-faith Deepavali celebrations organised by the Sauharda Committee, Catholic Sabha and Mother of Sorrows Church was inaugurated by Sri Esha Vittaldas Swamiji of Kemar Sandeepani Ashram.

In his address, the Swamiji said Deepavali signifies  happiness and joy and exhorted people to live a life of peace and harmony. He also emphasised the need to nurture good values in children  if India has to emerge as a strong nation.

Rev. Goldin  Bangera, CSI Bethania Church, Parpale said education was vital for the welfare of mankind and urged people to  have a good knowledge of their own religion before  commenting on other religions.

The function was presided over by Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi Diocese. Gyani Balraj Singh from the Sikh community and  Maulana Abdul Rashid  were the chief guests.

Earlier, chief guests of the event led by social activist Nityananda Olakadu lighted  earthern lamps fitted  in a 12 feet tall structure resembling a Christmas tree. There were a total of 556 earthen lamps in the tree.

A variety of events including cultural programmes by special children of Asha Nilaya, Goodu Deepa, Rangoli contests etc were conducted.
