Udupi DC says monsoon control rooms being set up

Udupi, May 24, 2018: Udupi DC Priyanka Mary Francis , on May 22, Tuesday said that dedicated control rooms would be arranged in all seven taluk headquarters in Udupi, Kundapur, Karkala, Byndoor, Brahmavar, Kaup, and Hebri to respond immediately to monsoon related problems.  She was chairing a meeting at the District Offices Complex.


Priyanka MaryDC  Francis said that control rooms should be set up in all five urban local bodies in the district — Udupi, Kundapur, Karkala, Saligrama, and Kaup. She directed the officers to take precautionary measures, including keeping boats ready, to provide relief in flood prone areas. The control rooms should also have a list of expert divers ready with them.

Officers should not keep their mobile phones switched off during monsoon and they should not leave their respective headquarters. They should take immediate relief measures to help those who are affected by the monsoon. Steps should also be taken to see that there is no water standing on national highways in the district. Precautionary measures should be taken in areas where there were likely to be landslips, she said.

All schools should be directed to tell their bus drivers to drive safely to schools and back during monsoon. No punishment or warning of any kind should be given by the schools to children for not reaching schools on time during monsoon. No pressure of any kind should be exerted on parents to bring their children on time to schools during the monsoon by the school managements, she said.

If there is heavy rain, schools could declare holidays by taking permission of the district administration. It was incumbent on all private and government schools to hold School Children’s Safety meeting before the commencement of the academic year. A report of the meeting should be provided by the schools to the Department of Public Instruction, she said.

The personnel of Mescom and Fire and Emergency Services should be ready to deal with any problem during this period. The gates of all vented dams should be kept open. Sea erosion related works should be completed within the stipulated time, Ms. Francis said.
