Udupi DC forms panel to launch crackdown on illegal sand extractors

Udupi, April 6,2017: Udupi Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis  has constituted a Committee comprising police officials  to check illegal sand extraction and also to vacate   unauthorised sheds and other materials stocked on the river banks   to facilitate   the unlawful work.

The administration has also set deadline to attach all illegal sheds. The Deputy Commissioner has said the operation will be carried out with police help.

The DC was speaking at an emergency meeting held to discuss  the measures that need to be taken to check illegal sand extraction and transportation. The DC said all boats, dredging machinery  must be seized using cranes.  

There is no scope for sand stocking even on Patta land and those who violated the rule will be served notice.  The officials have to adhere to the laws strictly, the DC said.

Permits have to be scrutinised when sand from outside state arrives. All measures have to be taken in a week’s time on a war footing, the DC said. She stated that 60,000 tonnes of sand is available for construction works and added sand requests can be forwarded to the Executive Engineer at KRIDL, Manipal, Assistant Executive Engineer PWD and  Senior Geologist of Department of Mines and Geology.

 
District Superintendent of Police  K T Balakrishna who also addressed the meeting said the Police Department was  committed t  co-operate with the district administration in its effort to crackdown the sand mafia. A separate team has been formed to check sand mafia in Kundapur taluk, he informed.
