Vishal_Sachin Meega, president of the Kisan Cell of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, said that he had, in a memorandum submitted to   Mukherjee on November 20, stated that farmers Rama Kulal from Amasebail village, Mahesh Poojary from Shirva village, Vittal Shetty from Hiriyadi village, and Chandrashekhar Shetty from Thekkatte village in Udupi district, had committed suicide a few months ago, as they were burdened with loans and could not repay it.  He had personally visited the houses of these farmers and ascertained the facts.

Assistant Commissioner Charulata Somal and Joint Director of Agriculture Anthony Maria Immanuel had not probed into these cases from a humanitarian viewpoint and failed to provide compensation to the families of these four farmers.   Hence, he had urged Chief Sec Mukherjee to suspend these officials and provide compensation to the families, President Meega said

Based on his [Mr. Meega’s] memorandum, the Chief Secretary’s Office had directed DC Dr. Vishal to submit an immediate report on this issue.  The directive was issued on November 21 and dispatched to the Udupi Deputy Commissioner from Bengaluru on November 26.
