Udupi CMC members raise a cry over neglected beaches

Udupi, Nov 01, 2014: The Udupi CMC members on Oct 31,  Friday raised concern over unkept beaches in the CMC limits.  They lamented that the beaches are filled with garbage and litter. Plastic covers and emptied bottles along the shore greet people and visitors.

Janardhan Bhan...Flaying the failure of the beach development committee under the leadership of the  deputy commissioner, the members said that the committee has failed to maintain beaches.

Highlighting the issues, member Janardhan Bhandarkar said that Udupi CMC should also take up Swacch Bharath Abhiyan seriously for good effect. Udupi has several tourist spots and  indeed it is essential to maintain them neat and clean. There is an urgent need for a fullfledged under ground drainage system, clean drinking water and solid waste management facilities in Udupi.

President Yuvaraj said that measures have already been taken to implement the provisions of Swacch Bharath Abhiyan. The CMC has given priority to cleanliness. Member Prakash Ameen said that the area in and around Malpe shore has become a dump yard. There are no toilets in the vicinity. The beach lacks cleanliness. Though the Nirmati Kendra was entrusted with the responsibility to construct toilets in Malpe beach, the work has notcommenced. According to Deputy Commissioner there is no dearth of funds to construct the toilets on Malpe beach.

Udupi Commissioner  Srikanth Rao said that the CMC has no role to play in the beach development committee, as it is headed by the Udupi DC.  The land has been identified for the construction of toilets.

Member Ganesh Nergi said that the beach development committee should be dissolved. The CMC should take up the responsibility of cleaning the beaches in its jurisdiction. Mushrooming of petty shops on the beaches have added to the problem.

The Commissioner said that only 24 petty shops have been issued license. Measures will be taken to evict illegal petty shops. To a query on pathetic condition of the road at Manipal bus stop, the Commissioner said that the CMC has no power to develop the road. The road comes under NHAI. The CMC can only fill the potholes. Members Ramesh Kanchan and Dinakar Shetty said that the CMC should take measures to punish those who dump garbage beside the roads.

To which, the Commissioner said that a person was caught red handed while dumping the garbage. Stringent action will be taken against those who dump the garbage on roads. Sumithra Nayak accused the CMC of neglecting Parkala and Herga region. The wards have met with step motherly treatment from the CMC with no development work being initiated.
