UPCL: KRRS to chalk out strategy

Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, March 01:  President of Udupi district unit of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) Vijaykumar Hegde said on Monday that the KRRS will decide on the future course of struggle against 1,200 MW coal-based thermal plant of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) on March 4.

Mr. Hegde told presspersons here that Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math had given a deadline of March 3 to the UPCL to wind up its operations in Udupi district.

The swamiji had given this deadline after he (the seer) and a delegation of KRRS had visited the fields of the farmers affected by the discharge of saline water from the thermal plant at Padebettu village recently.

The damage done to the fields and wells in the area surrounding thermal plant was incalculable.

He said the thermal plant itself was a tragedy for the district. But more unfortunate was the clean chit given to the UPCL by the Udupi tahsildar Prasanna. The tahsildar had failed to respond to the problems of the people of the area.

The recent clarification given by the UPCL was misleading, he said.
