Tusker electrocuted in Devachalla-Subramanya

Subramanya, Aug 9, 2014 :   A tusker which entered into an agriculture land in Devachalla village in Nalkoor reserve forest limits was electrocuted on Aug 8.  The wild elephant had entered the property of Herakaje Chinnappa Gowda on the previous night and a dog in the house had barked on seeing the elephant. Gowda’s family made loud noise to chase away the elephant. The tusker is said to have entered the farm land again and was electrocuted while attempting to suck the sap from fish tail palm tree (Caryo ureens).

It is suspected to have came in contact with the 11 KV electric line which passes near the tree and was electrocuted. On Aug 8 morning, when Chinnappa Gowda went to the farm, he found the dead elephant in a drainage by the roadside and informed the forest department. The age of the elephant is believed to be around 25 years. District Conservator of Forest O Palaiah, Sullia RFO Subbaiah Naik and others visited the spot. It could be recalled that a wild elephant had killed Hosoli Rama Bhat last year on February 12, in a place which is only three kilo meter away from Devachalla. Elephant menace in this area is known.
