Mangaluru, Jan 24, 2017: The Tulunada Rakshana Vedike organised a protest meeting in front of the Mini Vidhana Saudha here on January 24, Tuesday to condemn the ban on Kambala, the traditional sport of the coastal districts.
Addressing the protestors, Yogish Shetty Jeppu, Founder President of the Vedike said Kambala has been an inseparable part of culture of Tulunadu and that the ban on Kambala has deeply pained the people of the land. Kambala and farmers have a close bonding , he said adding the fate of the over 25 Kambala events in the district are hanging in fire due to the stay.
He said the argument that buffaloes are tortured during Kambla is unacceptable. "There is pain in all games. There have been occasions when cricketers have lost lives during play. Can or will cricket be banned for this reason?" he questioned.
"If hitting buffaloes is violence, then what can be said about the torture meted out to camels, horses and elephants while training ?" he further asked.
Stating that Tamil Nadu people have shown their determination by getting permission to conduct Jallikattu sport, he urged all elected representatives of the state to raise the issue in the Assembly as well as Parliament and ensure that the ban on Kambala is lifted.
