Mangaluru/Udupi, Aug 23, 2015: Briefing media Aug 22, Saturday, Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy Chairman S V Rajendra Singh Babu said the Academy will submit a report to the State government highlighting ways to improve Kannada film industry.
He said a body should be set up in Karnataka on the lines of KSFDC - Kerala State Film Development Corporation. KSFDC collects Rs three to five for every film ticket towards the development of film industry, with which the KSFDC has set up 13 single screen theatres exclusively to screen Malayalam movies.
The Academy has submitted a proposal to the government seeking subsidy for the construction of 300 theatres across the State. A subsidy of Rs 50 lakh will be given for those who come forward to build theatres under the scheme and it will be made mandatory for such theatres to screen Kannada movies throughout the year.
To discuss challenges being faced by the Kannada film industry and to mark celbrations over Tulu film industry completing 50 movies, the Academy in association with Manipal Media Network Ltd and Department of Information and Public Relations will organise a seminar at Manipal on August 29.
TAPMI, Manipal has conducted a study on the status of Kannada film industry and the challenges being faced by it. The study report will be released on the occasion.
Jogi, Sadashiva Shenoy and Balakrishna Puthige will present their opinions on the status of Kannada movies. To mark the celebrations of Tulu cinema industry completing 50 Tulu movies, ’Tuluchitra sambhrama’ will be held at Syndicate Bank Golden Jubilee Hall on August 29 at 5 pm. The programme will be inaugurated by Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake. A book on ’Tulu Bhasheya Suvarna chitragalu’ by Thamma Lakshman will be released on the occasion. A need is seen to strengthen Kannada film industry. With limited market, Kannada movies need to withhold the attention of the viewers. To analyse the challenges being faced by the Kannada film industry, a team of students and teachers of TAPMI has conducted a study. About the study, Prof Gururaj Kidiyoor said as part of the study, the team has spoken to producers and distributors in Bengaluru.
Public opinion was collected at five locations viz Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi-Dharwad and Kalaburagi. Questionaries were distributed among people, waiting outside theatres to watch Kannada movies. A total of 514 persons were contacted across Karnataka to collect opinion on Kannada film industry, quality of movies screened and quality of other language movies. Students preference were also given importance as 60 per cent of India’s population is in the age group of 35 years and below. The study showed that only 26 per cent of the youth watch Kannada movies. On the other hand, the percentage of movie goers in Malayalam and Tamil is high. With the increase in remake in Kannada film industry, many felt there is no originality and lacks good story. With increase in number of people who visit multiplexes, their expectations from single screen theatres are also high. Many also felt that the Kannada movies have failed to depict Kannada culture and tradition unlike other language movies.
Earlier, Tulu movie producers, directors had met Rajendra Singh Babu and had expressed concern over inordinate delay by the government in releasing subsidy for regional language films. Filmmakers have demanded early release of subsidy amount. At the same time, they also said the membership fee to Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce should be reduced.
He said Academy has plans to organise Belli Hejje programme in Mangaluru alongside children’s film festival.
Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy Chairman S V Rajendra Singh Babu said that the National Film Archives, Pune Film Institute and Academy will jointly organise a short term course in Film Appreciation, at Mysore University campus from September 21. The intake for the course is 60. Such courses will be organised in Kalaburagi, Hampi, Hassan in the days to come he informed.
