Tulu language in performing arts - Prof Heranje Krishna Bhat

Udupi, Feb 21, 2015:  Speaking after inaugurating the two-day celebrations in the memory of late Yakshagana artist Malpe Ramdas Samaga held here at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College,  The Regional Resource Centre Director Prof Heranje Krishna Bhat said Tulu language should be introduced as popular medium in the form of Yakshagana, theatre play or ballet, to save the language from becoming extinct.

Heranje Krishn..Prof Bhat said,  Tulu is a unique language and one of the ancient language among all other Dravidian languages. He called for attempts to save the language and added that Tulu should be made the medium of entertainment. The language is learnt effectively, when it is the medium of entertainment.  The children should be taught Tulu through the process of observing and speaking. The learning process through observation would remain in the memory for longer period as against the oral lessons.Lauding Yakshagana for its role as the medium of entertainment and language learning, Bhat added that Yakshagana represents the culture and is an effective means of communication. The culture and language of particular area should be acquainted to get the insight of the customs and folklore of the region. The brotherhood bonding is possible by developing interest in different cultures, he said and added that the veteran Yakshagana artist Malpe Ramdas Samaga was known for his experimental ideas imbibing the folk art into the aesthetics of Tulu language. ‘Delhi Patrika’ Editor B Samaga said the legendry Malpe Ramdas Samaga encouraged the idea of innovation in Yakshagana. He said different Yakshagana Melas in the region should go for Tulu Yakshagana and lamented that these days the Tulu Yakshaganas are diminishing.
