Tribunal orders Rs. 29 lakh compensation for road accident victim

Puttur, Sep 22, 2011 : The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal has ordered a compensation of Rs. 29 lakh to be paid to the family of a road accident victim. The order, passed on September 21 Wednesday, orders the owner of the tanker involved in the accident and the insurance company to pay the compensation to the victim’s family.

K. Ramachandra Bhat, the principal of Vittal PU College, died on June 14, 2007 when his two- wheeler was hit by a tanker near Kootelu Bridge in Uppinangady.

Sharadamma, the victim’s mother, and his son Krishna Prasad filed a claim at the tribunal seeking family maintenance and compensation since the deceased was the only breadwinner of the family.

The defendants were Velu Murugan, the driver of the tanker; Doraiswamy, the owner of the

tanker; and the insurance company covering the vehicle.

P. T. Kattimani, the tribunal judge, has also ordered that 6 percent interest should be paid for Rs. 29 lakh from the date of the claim application to the date of the order.

Mahesh Kaje, Prasadkumar Rai, and Kishore Kolattaya were the lawyers representing the claimants.
