Udupi , Nov 18, 2015: On Nov 17,  33 tri-scooters were distributed to eligible physically challenged persons by the Udupi Zilla Panchayat in collaboration with the Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala Taluk Panchayats. The tri-scooters were purchased from three per cent of government grants reserved for the welfare of physically challenged persons.

scooters.Speaking on the occasion, M. Kanagavalli, CEO of zilla panchayat, said this was for the first time in the State that the zilla panchayat and taluk panchayats had come together and used their funds to purchase tri-scooters for the physically challenged.

“It is a positive sign that the zilla panchayat and taluk panchayats, which are independent bodies, have come together for the welfare of the physically handicapped persons,” she said. The zilla panchayat had taken the assistance of the Rural Development and Self Employment Training (RUDSET) Institute at Brahmavar and provided a week-long free training in driving vehicles and entrepreneurial development for physically challenged persons under the Rajiv Gandhi Chaitanya Scheme a few months ago.

“It is essential that the physically challenged persons start some enterprise on their own. That will make them financially independent. They should take advantage of government schemes.
