Transport strike hits normal life in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, 30 April 2015: The 24-hour nationwide transport strike called by various trade unions against the Road Transport and Safety Bill affect normal life across the coastal districts on Thursday April 30.

Only private vehicles including autos plying on the roads and private service and city buses has not entered the road today morning.

The private bus owners had decided not to support the strike. But the staff of private operators decided otherwise in the light of hefty penalty proposed for various offences in the Bill as well as corporatisation of the public transport sector.

The drivers and conductors of private buses and a section of auto rickshaw operators have decided to participate in the strike. KSRTC staff have also decided to join the strike.

The Motor Transport and Engineering Workers Union of Dakshina Kannada district has, in a release here, said that the workers would participate in the strike.

Terming the Bill disastrous for the transport sector, union general secretary Vasanth Achary said that the proposals also included imprisonment of drivers for road accidents. As such, all workers have decided to abstain from work for a day.

Meanwhile, Federation of Karnataka Autorickshaw Drivers’ Union too has supported the strike call. District unit president Sunil Kumar Bajal said in a release that the drivers would join the agitation as the Bill is anti-worker. Sources in KSRTC said that though services are likely to be affected during the day, they would become normal in the evening.

Mangalore University has postponed its degree examinations scheduled on April 30 in view of the call for transport strike.BA fourth semester examination scheduled in the forenoon on  Thursday would be conducted in the forenoon on May 12.

B.Sc fourth semester examination would be conducted in the forenoon on May 6 and B.Com fourth semester examination would be conducted in the forenoon on May 4.

BA sixth semester examination would be conducted on May 5 afternoon. Examinations for repeaters of BA, B.Sc and B.Com courses scheduled on Thursday would be conducted on May 6.

The third semester BBM examination would be conducted in the forenoon on May 8 and sixth semester BBM examination would be held on May 2 afternoon.
