Transgender awareness ’Dhwani’ held at St. Aloysius College

Mangaluru, April 6, 2015: The Department of Mass Communication in association with ‘Arivu’ Yuvakendra Bantwal  (NGO) organized a program ‘Dhwani’,’ at St. Aloysius College on 6th April 2015 at Eric Mathias Hall.

This program was conducted to raise awareness on sexual minorities.  The programme was inaugurated by  Nadaman iNalkur president of ‘ Arivu’ Yuva Kendra, Bantwal who also addressed the gathering. In his keynote speech he said, that the difference between the  male  and  female followed from  ancient times, this biases the society towards percieving and accepting  transgenders in practice. He also said that in mythology like Ramayana, Mahabharata there was more respect for the transgenders than now.

Dr. Poornima J , MBBS, MS, Gynecologist/ Obstetrician, with long expeirence in female problems, addressing the transgenders said  health should be the first priority for them and they must be provided an opportunity to meet  and discus their health issues.

Praveen Nikhil, coordinator of ’Lingatwa Alpasankyata Samudaya Sangha’, stressed on how the  society needs to change their perspective of thinking. His team comprising of  Ramya, Prashanth and others addressed the audience regarding the challenges faced by them and sexual minorities. “Change should take place from the inner family circle, until then it will prove difficult to gain acceptance from  the society", said Ramya, member of Lingatwa Alpasankyat aSamudaya Sangha.  It was considered to have a larger meet on this subject in the future to allow better  awareness.

A vote of thanks and giving away of the mementos which was followed by an open forum where the audience interacted with Praveen Nikhil and his team.  The interactive session was lively and enlightened those present
