Train services resume on Mangaluru - Bengaluru route

Mangaluru, July 06, 2019: The Railways on Friday resumed train services between Bengaluru and Mangaluru via Sakleshpur-Subrahmanya Road Ghat stretch that was affected by landslips on Thursday. The authorities cleared the debris in a marathon operation since Thursday afternoon.

 

Empty rakes of the Bengaluru-Kannur/Karwar overnight express that were short-terminated at Hassan on Thursday night were brought to Mangaluru Central on Friday.

The rake of train no 16585, Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru Central overnight express that was short-terminated at Hassan, was also brought here on Friday evening and it is running as train no 16586, Mangaluru Central-Yeshwantpur overnight express, at its scheduled timing on Friday.

A release from Southern Railway’s Palakkad Division said that the Kannur/Karwar-Bengaluru overnight express (train nos 16518/16524) have been partially cancelled from Kannur/Karwar-Mangaluru Central and the trains started from Mangaluru towards Bengaluru on Friday night.

Meanwhile, day trains on the section, Train No 16576 Mangaluru Junction-Yeshwantpur Tri-weekly Gomateshwara Express and Train No 16515 Yeshwantpur-Karwar Tri-weekly Express, operated as per normal schedule on Thursday.

Officials from South Western Railway’s Mysuru Division said that engineers and workers were still engaged in work on the affected stretches, km 75 (between Siribagilu and Yedakumeri) and km 86 (Siribagilu). While debris have been removed, ancillary work and track flank levelling were still going on, the officials added.

South Western Railway had in fact undertaken certain preventive measures, including rock-netting, to prevent landslips in the ghat section. However, very heavy rain, like the one on Thursday (160 mm in the region), invariably triggered landslips, the officials said.
