Mangaluru, October 14, 2018: In an ironic yet tragic turn of events at Panabmur beach on Saturday, the promising life of a teenager was nipped in the bud, while an old man who wanted to die failed in his bid thanks to timely rescue efforts.
The teenager who died is identified as Sudharaj (18 yrs), son of Keshav Gerukatte of Belthangadi. He was studying at Government College, Belthangadi and had arrived at Panambur Beach with a group of 11 friends. After playing Kabaddi on the shore, all of them entered the water. As the sea was not considered to be safe for the day, they were asked to come back and all of them promptly complied. However Sudharaj is said to have suddenly jumped into the water before anybody could react and went missing, according to a media release issued by Yathish Baikampady, CEO of Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project.
Just before this incident a 69 year old man Mahadevappa, hailing from Gundlupete near Chamarajanagar had attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the sea near southern side of the main beach. He was promptly spotted and rescued. He was later handed over to the police, the release added.
