Yesterday a family celebration was underway, when Gladys’s daughter from Toronto Canada, Gloria Lobo (75) was overwhelmed and all excited on her mother’s birthday. In this circumstance, she collapsed at the venue at around 12.10 pm and was shifted to a private hospital. Soon after she was declared dead. The entire matter was tragic and all the participants of the celebration were in shock and grief thereafter.
Gloria, along with her daughter Liza and siblings Trevor D’Souza, Christopher D’Souza and Norma, organised a grand celebration for Gladys D’Souza nee Currie. She has been living in Mangaluru since 2008 in a senior citizens home near Rosario Cathedral, Bolar.
Hailing from a well known Konkani Catholic family of Mangaluru City, Gladys D’Souza’s ascendants were ancient residents of ‘Candle garden’ located between the present Jyothi Cinema and Woodlands Hotel, at the foothills of St Aloysius College.
Gladys was blessed with five children - Gloria, Pam, Norma, Trevor and Christopher; she lost her husband quite early and was later father and mother the children who doted on her and visit her at regular intervals. Gladys loves receiving phone calls from her children and grandchildren who are all abroad. She came to Mangalore and livid due to the fact that the environment in Canada was not conducive to her age and habits.
The tragedy shocked all present and was witnessed by this correspondent too.
