Toppers in Science stream are from Udupi

Udupi, May 26, 2016: Hard work and dedication saw four students of Udupi district become toppers in the Science stream in the State, while one student topped in the Commerce stream.

In the Science stream, a student each bagged the second and third slots, while two students were in the fourth slot. In the Commerce stream, a student bagged the second slot.

Neha D. Shetty, who was second in the State in the Science stream, scored 595 out of 600 marks. She said that though she had expected to do well, she had not expected to become a topper. “I cannot explain how I am feeling in words,” she said.

A student of Jnanasudha Pre-University College, Karkala, Ms. Shetty, who stays at Nitte village, got 100 marks each in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science. She got 98 in Hindi and 97 in English. Her ambition is to become a chemical engineer. Why? “No one takes that field. Taking risks in good so I want to take it,” she said.

She would prefer to join NITK-Surathkal to study chemical engineering. She did not take private coaching. She used to study about four hours a day which increased to about 16 hours during exams. Daughter of Dayananda Shetty, who works as a mechanic at Doha, Qatar, and Savita Shetty, a homemaker, Ms. Neha’s hobbies are painting and sketching. “I attribute my success to my parents and my mathematics teacher at my college, Sudhakar Shetty,” she said.

Aim

Prajna, a student of Vidyodaya Pre-University College, Udupi, has bagged the third slot in the State in the Science stream.

She got 594 out of 600 marks. She scored 100 marks each in Statistics, Physics and Mathematics, and 99 in Hindi, and 96 in English.

Ms. Prajna, a resident of Hejmady village near Udupi said that she had expected good marks but not this much. Her aim is to become a computer engineer.

“I have also written Manipal University online entrance exams. I will opt for R.V. College in Bengaluru or Manipal Institute of Technology. I will decide on the college after getting my CET rankings,” she said.

Daughter of Hemanath Puthran, a businessman and Shobha Puthran, an employee at CA Bank at Hejmady, She used to do about four to five hours study daily. She took coaching for CET and not for PU course.

“I attribute my success to my college teachers, parents and my friend Kirtana,” Ms. Prajna said.

Medicine

Pooja Nayak, a student of Jnansudha Pre-University College, Karkala, who was in the fourth place in the State in Science stream, wants to become a doctor. She scored 593 out of 600 marks. She got 100 marks each in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology, while getting 97 in English and 96 in Hindi.

She said that she had expected above 590 marks and was thus not surprised by the results. “I have always wanted to serve people. Hence I want to become a doctor and serve in rural areas,” she said.

She would choose the college where she would study medicine depending on her CET rankings. She did not take any private coaching. Her college gave the students additional coaching for two months and conducted five preparatory examinations.

“This helped us a lot. Besides, my teachers were always ready to clear our doubts almost on a 24x7 basis. I am proud of my college,” she said.

Daughter of Ganapati Nayak, who runs a general stores at Muniyal village, and Gayatri Nayak, a homemaker, Ms. Pooja’s hobbies are Bharatnatyam and drawing.

Akshay Rao, a student of R.N. Shetty Pre-University College, Kundapur, was also in the fourth place in the Science stream. He got 100 marks each in Mathematics, Statistics and Sanskrit, 99 each in Physics and Chemistry, and 95 in English. A resident of Siddapura village near Kundapur, Mr. Rao said that he had expected to be a topper.

His ambition is to become an electronics and communications engineer. He would prefer to join an engineering college either in Mysuru or Bengaluru depending on CET rankings. He used to study about five hours a day. He too did not take any private coaching. His hobbies are singing, playing cricket and reading books.

Son of Gurumurthy Rao, advocate and Geeta Rao, homemaker, Mr. Rao attributed his success to his parents and teachers.
