Tinted glasses in vehicles, smoking to be checked in city

Mangaluru, Aug 2, 2016: As per reports the Mangaluru City police is all set to launch a serious  drive against use of tinted glasses in vehicles that restrict vision as prescribed under motor vehicles act.

The drive will be in line with a Supreme Court order that banned use of such tinted glasses. As per rules, windscreen and rear window glasses should have light transmission of 70% and that for side windows should have at least 50%.

Mangaluru city police commissioner M Chandra Sekhar said the campaign, which will be held within a week, would not spare any vehicle, whether it is government or privately-owned. "All vehicles will be checked and tint stickers will be removed on the spot," the commissioner said at an SC/ST monthly grievance meeting.

Replying to a query by dalit leader Ramesh Kotian on the rising illegal activities here, the commissioner said they plan to increase the number of CCTV cameras in the city. "Currently there are 42 CCTV cameras fixed at various parts of the city. We plan to install 60 more at selected locations in the city. Tender process has been commenced to procure and install CCTV cameras," he said, adding that work would begin soon.

Chandra Sekhar added the city police would also launch an awareness drive in association with NGOs against the use of cigarette, beedi and other tobacco products and close down shops that sell these products near schools.
