Though monsoon has subsided, city roads continue to remain battered

Mangaluru, Sep 12, 2018: Mangaluru Corporation says it has already taken up pothole-filling work and fixed many as of now.

 

It is almost a fortnight now after rain subsided in the coastal region, yet bituminous stretches of roads in the city continue to sport potholes and craters making motoring a nightmarish experience for citizens.

While many arterial roads in the city have been concreted over the past few years, several stretches still continue to be bituminous roads, including Hampanakatte Junction, Karavali Junction (Kankanady) to Pumpwell (Bhagwan Mahaveer) Junction, Bolara Main Road, Morgan’s Gate to Jeppinamogaru, besides the sub-arterial and inner roads.

The four-lane road between Pumpwell and Kankanady is full of craters and potholes which slow down vehicular movement on one of the busiest stretches in the city. Despite regular repair and filling of potholes, the road continues to remain battered for the sheer absence of proper shoulder drains, said Vivekanand Shenoy, a resident of Kankanady.

Morgan’s Gate Circle, leading to Jeppinamogaru and further South towards Kasargod in Kerala on National Highway 66, has almost become non-motorable with the bitumen cover completely wearing out. The road from Morgan’s Gate till Jeppinamogaru continues to remain battered, except for a small stretch, even as it witnesses very heavy vehicular movement.

The Bolara Main Road too is full of potholes even as dust clouds envelop passers-by and adjacent buildings whenever a heavy vehicle passes through. The Bolara Circle, which had developed a large crater with a depth of more than 2 ft last year, has again gone back to the same position, said Mohammed Shami, a resident of the area.

Incoming and outgoing vehicles to and from the central business district crawl at Hampanakatte Junction. While speedbreakers at this location have crumbled, road surfaces have developed huge craters, said Steven Rego, a regular visitor to the area.

Mangaluru City Corporation Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer told The Hindu that the corporation has already taken up pothole-filling work and fixed many as of now. Complete relaying of the bitumen on the affected parts would take some time as the corporation’s bitumen batching plant will commence work by October, he said. Potholes at Kankanady would again be filled, Mr. Nazeer said and added that Bolara Main Road is due for concreting after the laying of a new underground drainage line.
