Mangalore, Sep 24, 2014 : Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya, Mangalore and Netravati Ulisi Horata Samithi, Uppinangady  will continue their protest against the proposed Yettinahole project. A meeting of all like-minded organisation will be held to discuss on the future course of action, at Sumasadana, Mallikatte on September 28.

Yettinahole

The Yettinahole project proposes to divert water from the Yettinahole, a tributary of river Netravati to meet the drinking water supply of Chikkaballapur and Tumkur districts and parts Bangalore Urban.

Speaking to media Dinesh Holla of Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya said that there is a conspiracy behind the implementation of Yettinahole project. The authorities are claiming that 24 tmc feet water would be drawn from Yettinahole during monsoon. If they fail to get 24 tmc feet water, then they will implement Paramasivayya report on Netravati diversion, to cater to the needs of the people of Chikkaballapura, Tumkur and Bangalore Urban.  After rejecting Madhav Gadgil report on conservation of Western Ghats, the Centre government is getting ready for another report within two months, to cater to the needs of major projects in the Western Ghats, he alleged.

Social activist M G Hegde said that people of Dakshina Kannada should understand the fact that elected representatives are lying on the project. There is a need to understand the reality on the project.

“The project will traverse 18-km in forest area. In such a scenario, how can they claim that not a single trees will be felled for the proposed project. If the water from the river is diverted and not flow into the sea, then it will impact the fishing . The government has taken a hasty decision to approve the project. It was the contractors who had coordinated the meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently to discuss the project.” He said that a writ petition has already been filed in Green Tribunal on the Yettinahole project.

Dr Niranjan Rai of Netravati Ulisi Horata Samithi, Uppinangady said “the project will be an environmental hazard,  it will disturb the nature by artificial diversion. The Niddodi ultra mega power project has been approved. About 370 MW electricity will be required to lift water from Yettinahole. Niddodi power project will cater to the needs of the Yettinahole project this is unjust,” Dr Niranjan Rai added. Will, the rain at present help in postponing the project.
