Ten fast track courts to stem atrocities against women soon

Udupi, Nov 26, 2014:  Speaking after inaugurating the new administrative office of the Coastal Security Police at the Malpe fisheries harbour here on Nov 25, Tuesday. Home Minister K.J. George has said the State government is taking steps to set up 10 fast track courts to ensure speedy justice in cases of atrocities against women.

 

 Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake also inaugurated the police staff quarters on the occasion.

Min George said the State government had requested the Karnataka High Court  and received a sanction to set up three fast track courts. The government had also requested the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court to provide judges to these fast track courts.  The increase in cases of atrocities against women in the State was due to increased conciousness on this issue, Minister George said. The police had been told to register cases whenever such cases occurred and take prompt action.

The government had set up an expert committee headed by the former Law Minister M.C. Nanaiah to suggest amendments to laws related to sexual assault cases, he said.

Protest  :  Meanwhile, activists of the district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a protest against Home Minister K.J. George at the entrance of the Malpe fisheries harbour.

The police had told the BJP workers that they should not use black flags during the protest. But as the Ministers cars came near the entrance of the harbour, the BJP members shouted slogans against him and one member managed to wave a black flag. The police confiscated the flag and took about 50 BJP leaders into preventive custody.
