Teaching is incomplete without research: VC

Mangalore, April 30: “Teaching, learning, and research should happen simultaneously,” said Prof T C Shivashankar Murthy, the vice chancellor of Mangalore University, while delivering a lecture at a felicitation programme organized by the Association of First Grade College Principals of Mangalore University at the Conference Hall of SDM College in Mangalore on April 30, Friday. Dr. H Shantharam, the president of Private College Managements Association, honored the vice chancellor on behalf of the association.
Saying that the national hubs of research are not just institutions, but also responsible universities, Prof Murthy added that research is an integral part of education and that teaching without research is valueless. He expressed satisfaction about the overall performance of affiliated colleges, adding that affiliated colleges are the backbone of any university.
He informed that 174 colleges are affiliated to the Mangalore University. Admitting that it is not a big number compared to other universities, he said that the quality of education is more important than the number of affiliated colleges. He also said that Mangalore University is willing to grant autonomy to any college, which demands it. Simultaneously, he clarified that autonomy does not full freedom; it only means academic autonomy.
Responding to complaints that the university charges high fees, he said that the fee structure of the university is quite reasonable when compared to other universities. He said that the fees charged by Mangalore University are much lesser than those charged by the other universities of Karnataka.
Prof Murthy urged all the affiliated colleges to cooperate with the university and take it to greater heights. He said that the university is happy to cooperate with the affiliated colleges, but expects the same cooperation from the colleges too.
President of the Federation of Principals Association Y Bhaskar Shetty presided over the programme.
