Mangalore, Aug 05, 2014:  Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a programme on August 4,  Minister for Youth Service and Sports and Moodbidri MLA K Abhayachandra Jain informed that he would propose to  government to convert Government TB Hospital at Vamanjoor into a general hospital.

Abhayachandra jainThe hospital which is now in a deplorable condition has to be developed and there is sufficient land available in the hospital premises for the same.  Jain said he would ask the government to sanction funds to upgrade the hospital.

Developing it as a general hospital will help to lessen the burden on the Government Wenlock Hospital too. Rs five lakh has been temporarily released for repairing the building, he said.

DK,  Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim who earlier visited the hospital to inspect conditions, was appalled with the  deplorable conditions that prevailed within and without this ’hospital’.

During his visit 35 beds were occupied in the 100 bed hospital. Visibly upset over the lack of patients, he questioned Superintendent Dr Saroja, why no patients turn up at this hospital.

The Superintendent cited DOTS treatment offered at District TB Centre in Mangalore as the reason for patients not getting admitted in TB hospital.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner ordered for assessing land in the possession of  the hospital. Two hundred acre land which was with the hospital when it was opened in 1966, has now been reduced to 18 acre. Later speaking to media he said that the proposed government medical college can be established in TB hospital premises rather than in Wenlock or Mangalore city, Vamanjoor is very accessible and not far at all.
