Survey of manual scavengers from Feb 29

Mangaluru Feb 27, 2016: Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim has said that in the past few years several cases regarding manual scavenging  have come to light and a survey on manual scavengers would be conducted in this regard from February 29.

 Speaking to the press at his office on Feb 27, Saturday he said that  this survey sample will be collected from  rural areas and same will be discussed in Gram Sabha in the presence of Gram Panchayat Presidents. Deputy Commissioner will analyze the survey samples after which data entry will be done, he added.

CEO of Zilla Panchayath Sreevidya said that, through this survey Manual Scavengers will be identified and a rehabilitation centre will be set up for them. Survey will be led by PDOs and  Gram Panchayath Secretaries, she added.

District Social Welfare Officer Santhosh said that, as per the 2011 census, 123 manual scavengers have been identified in Dakshina Kannada, while as  per the survey done by Backward classes organization in 2015, a total of 634 families have been identified as Manual Scavengers in Dakshina Kannada  out of which 96 are in Mangaluru, 261 in Bantwal, 36 in Puttur, 222 in Belthangady and 19 in Sullia.
