New Delhi, March 13, 2024: The Supreme Court has intervened to halt the forthcoming board examinations for classes 5, 8, 9, and 11 in Karnataka. This decision was prompted by concerns raised over a notification issued by the state government, which was found to be in violation of Section 30 of the Right to Education Act.

The controversy arose on March 7 when a division bench of the Karnataka High Court initially sanctioned the state government’s proposal to conduct board exams for these classes. However, doubts regarding the legality of such examinations quickly emerged.

Upon scrutinizing the issue, the Supreme Court determined that the notification for these exams seemed to breach Section 30 of the Right to Education Act. This section guarantees that no child undergoes any form of examination until the completion of elementary education.
