Karkala, May 6, 2015 : Councillors of Karkala have unanimously resolved against clearing the bill of the contractor who was responsible for sub-standard road work inside the Karkala APMC Yard.
It has been gathered that a contractor named Jayakumar of Belthangady who had taken up the work had flouted all rules while undertaking the favor finish works on an 800 meter road in the yard at a cost of Rs 16.50 lakhs.
The allegation is that the completed road looks sub-standard and is uneven and that the contractor had used an outdated roller while executing the work.
The tar and baby jelly mixture used in one portion of this road was prepared by lighting fire using firewood, it has been alleged.
It is said the contractor had gone ahead with the sub-standard work despite the APMC authorities filing objection to the same. Even the side drain works are of poor quality, sources said .
All works entrusted to single contractor : Surprisingly, the contract for not only the road work, but also side drain construction at a cost of Rs 11 lakh, godown construction project worth Rs 15 lakhs and the task of erecting roofing for the staff quarters at a cost of Rs 6.60 lakhs has been entrusted to Jayakumar himself.
It is now being said that the contractor had completed the sub-standard work despite being directed to suspend the works after it was found to be of inferior quality. The APMC now claims that it was not responsible for the poor quality of work.
