Strict traffic rules enforcement reduces violations and increases revenue

Udupi, June 14,2016: The very strict measures taken by the Udupi Police Department led by Superintendent of Police Annamalai has resulted in a seen reduction of violations of traffic rules by the public, and it has also led the Department to collect the highest revenue for the state’s exchequer.

The Udupi SP states that the total revenue through the fine collected in the year 2016 is Rs 22,76,500 up to May. “The fines collected in the month of May alone was Rs 6,73,400, which is the highest in the state for any month. There are no major efforts taken to ease the traffic in the area – except that the Department has implemented the traffic norms strictly. Everything is as per the law, the violations are not tolerated,” he insisted.

The fines are levied on traffic violations like rash and negligent driving, over speeding, drunken driving, driving without licence, no entry, not producing required documents, using high beam lights, tinted glasses, no parking violations and riding without helmets.

“The earnings in the year 2014 was Rs 21,06,700, in 2015 it was Rs 38,88,700. In 2016, the income collected in the month of January was Rs 1,64,800, it was Rs 3,47,900 in February, Rs 5,99,800 in March and Rs 4,90,600 in April. Up to May 31, 2016, the revenue collected was Rs 22,76,500. The amount collected is deposited in the state treasury,” said the officer.

In 2014, as many as 16,161 cases were reported, out of which 16,151 were convicted and 10 cases were acquitted. In 2015, 32,208 cases were reported, of which 32,203 were convicted. The remaining five cases of drunken driving offence are pending for trials.

In 2016, up to May, as many as 520 rash and negligent driving cases, 866 over speeding cases, 35 drunken driving cases, 360 driving without licence cases, 71 no entry cases, 2,123 cases for not producing documents, 61 for using high beam lights, 2 cases of using tinted glasses for vehicles, 99 cases for parking violations, 10,780 cases for riding without helmets were reported. A total of 18,638 cases are already reported for the year 2016, of which 18,596 cases are convicted and 44 cases are pending for trials.

In 2016, the majority cases were reported for riding without helmets, whereas in 2014 and 2015, it was for not producing the valid documents. A total of 4,364 cases in 2014 and 10,440 cases in 2015 were reported against the offence. In 2014 and 2015, barely three cases each were reported for riding without helmets.

The least number of cases in 2016 is for using tinted glass. In 2014 and 2015, as many as 53 and 105 cases respectively were reported for the violation. The crime of riding or driving in no entry zones is also minimal in 2016, when compared to 2014 and 2015. Till May end 2016, mere 71 cases are reported for no entry violations, while in 2014 and 2015, the number of cases reported under the section is 1,717 and 1,108, hopefully the traffic culture will show a positive impact too.
