Steel Cross installed atop Kalmadi church

Mangaluru, July 26,2017: A stainless steel Cross, 3.5 meter high, 2 meter wide; weighing 250 kg was installed atop the new boat-shaped Stella Maris Church building under construction at Kalmadi, Malpe, here on Tuesday.

According to a press release by the church, the construction work of the new boat-shaped church began on 2014, next to the existing church building. The installation ceremony was marked by a prayer service by Fr. Alban D’Souza, parish priest of the church.

Later, the huge Cross was installed atop the church with the help of a crane.

The new church was being built in a unique layout with a boat shape.

The new church building is coming up on a total area of 10,000 sq ft with a seating capacity of 700.

It is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 5 crore.

Rev. Fr. Alban D’Souza, in coordination with Sanjay Andrade, vice-president of Parish Pastoral Council, Shobha Mendonca, secretary, and Louis Lobo, convener of the Church Renovation Committee, put in their efforts for the completion of the project along with the members of the building committee and the parishioners and workers.

According to the press release, this will be the State’s first boat-shaped church and it will be inaugurated on January 6, 2018.
