State Govt to set up sub-regional science centres in districts

Mangalore, Sept 13, 2014: The State Government will get sub-regional science centres at the district level in addition to three regional science centres already on the anvil, said S R Patil, Karnataka Minister for Science and Technology.

Reviewing progress of works related to setting up of regional science centre here, Patil said objective of these centres is to create scientific temper among students and public on science and allied issues.

 

The sub-regional science centres are being set up in addition to the three regional science centres already planned in the State. As on now, regional science centre in Dharwad set up a cost of Rs 10.50 crore has been inaugurated. CM Sidddaramaiah and union minister for tourism Shripad Naik are scheduled to inaugurate the regional science centre here next month.

He said that the Mangalore Pilikula Regional Science Centre, which is being established at a cost of Rs.11.50 crore, will be inaugurated by the Karnataka Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, and the Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Shripad Yasso Naik, next month and the Government will also set up a 3D planetarium at a cost of Rs.24.50 crore at Pilikula, he said.

The state’s third regional science centre will be set up in Mysore at a cost of Rs 14.50 crore, he said, adding all these centres are being set up with financial assistance from both the state and central governments.

However, the sub-regional science centres at the district level will be set with financial assistance from the State Government. The Government will set up two centres each every year at a cost of Rs3.6 crore, he said.

The sub-regional science centres will come up at Raichur, Haveri, Tumkur, Hassan, Shimoga, Belgaum, Bellary, Karwar, Madikeri and Bidar. Noting that efforts were made to set up these sub-centres with funding from National Science and Technology Museum, Patil said state government had released its share of Rs 1.3 crore. But with union government not releasing funds, the state government is going ahead with these centres on its own, he said.
